Unidirectional Cellulose Fibre Reinforced Hierarchical Composites

Project Overview

Composite is shaping the future. A lot of attention is currently turned onto composites made from green material such as natural or cellulosic fibres and biodegradable polymers to ease the end-of-life of the composites. In this project, we focus on manufacturing truly-green hierarchical composite by incorporating continuous Cordenka® rayon fibres reinforced poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and bacteria cellulose (BC) via powder-impregnation method. Cordenka® fibre reinforced polymer is widely known for its high elastic modulus, light-weight, has a significant energy absorption capacity and hence have great potential in automotive industries. PHB is a biodegradable polymer which is extremely brittle and has an extremely low melt viscosity. Due to these attributes, it is almost impossible to process this polymer using a conventional method. BC on the other hand is a nano-scaled compound, highly crystalline in nature, light weight, non-toxic, renewable and biodegradable. Integrating these compounds produces a novel unidirectional green composite with enhanced mechanical properties aiming for applications such as those used for interior vehicle components. A cost benefit analysis is to be included in this study.
