We develop multifunctional composite materials that can simultaneously carry mechanical loads and store (and deliver) electrical energy. A proof-of-concept multifunctional structural power storage material is under development. We have investigated a carbon fibre reinforced polymer composite which can act as a supercapacitor with sufficient good mechanical properties (Young’s Modulus, Shear stiffness, compression strength, and peel and shear toughness).
